He couldn’t get enough of the roller coasters and thrill rides (and so those of us tall enough to accompany him did so over and over and over again). As in, absolutely LOVED everything about it. That said, our ten-year-old loved the park. The family attractions, such as the animal shows, were nice to have on hand, but compared to the degree of professionalism at Sea World (from both the trainers and the animals), Six Flags fell flat. This was especially hard for our thrill seeking 36er and our almost tall enough 47-and-a-halfer. We found the areas geared toward young children to be lacking in short (no pun intended) there wasn’t enough for someone under 48 to ride. The staff we came in contact with at Six Flags was generally apathetic and at times downright rude. Perhaps it’s not fair to compare Six Flags to the likes of Sea World, Disney World, and Legoland, but we did¦and they must too, since their admission prices are compatible. We had not visited Six Flags for a number of years (I believe it was Marine World Africa USA last time we were there) and this trip, we found our enjoyment of this park varied greatly depending on our age and propensity toward high speed thrill rides. This compensation came with no expectations or agreements for a positive review (as you will see).

We did, however, pay full price for all food and extras. In the interest of full disclosure, my family enjoyed the park using complimentary admission vouchers. We stopped on our way home to Oregon from Laguna Beach this past summer, staying one night at the Courtyard by Marriott Napa Valley (which was very comfortable although predictably packed with families) directly across the street and playing for one day at Six Flags before continuing home. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom may seem more like a destination than a pitstop, but given its location off I-80 and near the I-5 corridor between LA and Sacramento, it serves as a great overnight break from long-distance driving. It was really easy to just wander to an exhibit and stumble upon a caregiver giving a talk.Thrill rides remain the biggest draw to Discovery Kingdom The park would always occasionally have people around to answer things, but this seemed a lot more common. Basically it meant that throughout the day there were animal caretakers at the different exhibits, generally providing some info, showing off some of the animals, and answering questions. Luckily the crowds were small enough that it didn’t seem to be an issue.Īlong with the regular shows, the park added a bunch of “Caregiver talks” to the lineup. The stadiums were encouraging social distancing only allowing guests in every 4th row, and I did see employees ask people to move. It looked like all of the parks normal animal shows were in operation, including the dolphin, tiger, and seal/sea lion shows. Some distancing markers in the theater, reminders to wear masks, and explanation as to why the caregivers don’t wear masks (Tigers don’t like ’em). The Odin’s Temple of the Tiger show that has been at the park for years was just like always. I did see one person with a map, so maybe at Guest Services you could request one? One of the downsides I found was that there didn’t seem to be any maps (which makes sense for sanitary reasons), so if you weren’t familiar with the park it might be a little trickier to find everything. Animal Exhibits, Shows, and Interaction.Ībout 2/3 of Discovery Kingdom is open to guests for the Marine World Experience, basically providing access to all the outdoor animal exhibits. Masks are required for all guests, and a convenient booth was setup before the temperature check selling face masks for folks who needed them. The Thursday I went the park was pretty empty all day, which no doubt helped, but it seemed like they had a good set-up for smooth entry.

There were plenty of open time slots, although note the park is only open Fridays-Sundays now.
